Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market cap as a share of the whole crypto market. Rising dominance usually means capital is concentrating in BTC (risk-off or a Bitcoin-led rally); falling dominance means altcoins are outperforming.

It is a rotation gauge. When dominance climbs, Bitcoin is outperforming the rest of the market, common in early recoveries and in risk-off periods when traders retreat to the largest asset. When it falls, money is flowing into altcoins, which is what the Altcoin Season Index measures by breadth instead of by market cap.
Stablecoins count toward total market cap, so a large stablecoin supply lowers Bitcoin dominance mechanically without anyone selling BTC. Some analysts therefore also look at dominance excluding stablecoins.
Neither on its own. Bitcoin can lead a bull market (dominance up, prices up) or be the last thing standing in a bear market (dominance up, prices down). Read dominance together with price and the Fear & Greed Index.
