Each day's closing international price (India time) at that day's reference dollar rate, plus 15% duty, before GST. Weekend rows follow round-the-clock token trading while bullion markets are shut.
Estimate the bill for a piece of jewellery at today's rate. Making charges differ by shop and design, typically 8% to 25% of the gold value.
Gold and silver are priced worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). India imports almost all the gold it uses, so the Indian rate starts from that global price:
The government raised the effective import duty on gold and silver bullion from 6% to 15% on 13 May 2026 to slow imports and support the rupee. That change alone lifted Indian prices by roughly 8% overnight, and it is why the Indian rate now sits well above the world price.
Rates also differ slightly between cities and shops because of transport, local demand and each jeweller's margin. Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata associations each publish a daily rate, and these usually sit within about 1% of the figure above. Check your jeweller's board rate before you buy.
Gold has been a store of value for thousands of years and moves slowly. Bitcoin is often called "digital gold" because its supply is capped, but its price is far more volatile. Over the last 12 months, gold moved +12.8% in dollar terms while Bitcoin moved -26.1%. In India they are also taxed differently: gains on gold held for more than two years count as long-term capital gains, while crypto gains are taxed at a flat 30% however long you hold. 24 carat gold is about ₹14,619 per gram (₹1,46,186 per 10 grams) and 22 carat gold is about ₹13,391 per gram today, 28 Sep 2026, before 3% GST. Jewellers in each city publish their own rate, which is usually within about 1% of this.
24K gold is 99.9% pure and is used for coins and bars. It is too soft for most jewellery, so jewellery is made in 22K (91.6% gold, sold with the BIS hallmark "916") or 18K (75% gold). That is why 22K costs about 8% less per gram than 24K.
India imports almost all its gold. Since 13 May 2026 bullion imports carry an effective duty of 15%, up from 6%, so the Indian rate sits about 15% above the global spot price converted to rupees. Buyers then pay 3% GST on top.
3% GST applies to the value of gold coins, bars and jewellery. When you buy jewellery from a shop, the 3% is usually charged on the full bill including making charges. If a goldsmith only charges for making jewellery from your own gold, that job work carries 5% GST.
One tola (about 11.66 g) of 24K gold costs about ₹1,70,508. One sovereign or pavan (8 g), the unit used in South India, of 22K gold costs about ₹1,07,125 before GST.
They behave very differently. Gold is a centuries-old store of value with low volatility; Bitcoin can rise or fall far more in a single month. Over the last 12 months gold moved +12.8% in dollars and Bitcoin moved -26.1%. Many investors hold a small amount of each rather than choosing one. See our Bitcoin price in INR.
