Attackers have drained roughly $7 million from the hot wallets of crypto casino Duelbits, forcing the platform offline. It was the second platform hack in a single day, following the far bigger $352 million Bitget breach.

What happened at Duelbits

The first warning came from security firm Scam Sniffer, which spotted funds flowing out of Duelbits' hot wallets to freshly created addresses. Here is what is known so far:

  • The attacker took funds on four networks: Ethereum, BNB Chain, Tron and Bitcoin. The Bitcoin haul included 8.1 BTC.
  • Around 2,234 ETH, worth about $6 million, was gathered into one Ethereum address. Those coins had not moved at last check.
  • The suspected cause is a compromised private key.

Duelbits co-founder Joe confirmed the attack on X: “Confirming a ~$7M hack. Still investigating exactly what happened and how.” He added that user funds are safe. The site will stay down until the investigation is complete and the hot wallets have been topped up again.

Why hot wallets keep getting hit

A hot wallet stays connected to the internet so that customers can withdraw quickly. That convenience is exactly what makes it the first thing attackers go after. If someone gets hold of the private key, they can move the funds as easily as the platform can.

Duelbits is not the first casino to learn this. In 2023, rival crypto casino Stake lost about $40 million after a private key compromise.

A warning for Indian users

Real-money online gaming and betting face heavy restrictions in India. Offshore crypto casinos sit outside Indian law, so there is very little legal protection if a platform is hacked or freezes withdrawals. A few basic habits help:

  • keep only small amounts on any platform whose keys you do not control;
  • never share your seed phrase with anyone;
  • move long-term holdings to a wallet you control.
