The Fear and Greed Index analyses market sentiment on a 0 to 100 scale to help you make informed decisions. Stay ahead of market turns with the live reading, its recent history and the one-year chart against Bitcoin's price. Updated 9 min ago; the index itself refreshes daily.
The Fear and Greed Index measures the emotional state of the crypto market. It ranges from 0 to 100: a low value signals extreme fear (investors are selling and sentiment is pessimistic), a high value signals extreme greed (euphoria, FOMO, over-extended positions). Because markets are driven by emotion in the short term, the index is a useful check on whether the crowd is panicking or partying, and therefore whether the market may be undervalued or overheated.
Treat it as a contrarian thermometer. Historically, readings in extreme fear have clustered near market lows and extreme greed near local tops, but the index can stay extreme for weeks. Use it to question your own emotions, never as a stand-alone buy/sell signal. Combine it with price structure, volume, dominance and your risk rules.
The index (published daily by alternative.me) blends several inputs: volatility (25%) versus 30/90-day averages, market momentum & volume (25%), social media activity (15%), Bitcoin dominance (10%) and Google Trends search data (10%), with a surveys component currently paused. Each is normalised to 0 to 100 and weighted into the final score.
