Cryptocurrency Share Price: Crypto Stocks Indians Can Buy

Crypto coins have prices, not share prices. Here are the crypto stocks and ETFs Indians can buy, from Coinbase and Strategy to Jetking, and how they are taxed.

Many people search for a "cryptocurrency share price", expecting crypto to trade like shares on the NSE. It does not. A coin such as Bitcoin has a price, set on crypto exchanges around the clock, but it is not a share in any company. There are, however, listed crypto stocks: companies whose business depends on crypto. This guide explains the difference and shows which crypto stocks and funds Indian investors can buy.

Key takeaways

  • Coins are not shares. For live coin prices in rupees, see our crypto prices in India page.
  • No Indian crypto exchange is listed on the NSE or BSE. CoinDCX, CoinSwitch and WazirX are private companies.
  • Indians can buy US crypto stocks such as Coinbase, Strategy and Circle, and spot Bitcoin ETFs, through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS).
  • These stocks and ETFs are taxed as foreign shares, not under the 30% crypto rule.
  • There is no crypto mutual fund in India. SEBI has said mutual funds cannot invest in crypto without a law.

Crypto price vs share price

When you buy a share, you own part of a company, with a claim on its profits. When you buy a coin, you own a digital asset whose value depends only on what others will pay for it. The two also differ in practice:

  • Trading hours: crypto trades 24 hours a day, every day. Shares trade on market days only.
  • Regulator: Indian shares fall under SEBI. Crypto has no market regulator in India, and exchanges register only with FIU-IND for anti-money-laundering rules.
  • Tax: Indian share gains are taxed at 20% (short term) or 12.5% (long term, with an exemption up to ₹1.25 lakh). Crypto gains are taxed at a flat 30%, with no loss set-off.

US-listed crypto stocks

Company (ticker)What it does
Coinbase (COIN)Largest US crypto exchange. It also holds a small stake in India's CoinDCX.
Strategy (MSTR)Formerly MicroStrategy. The largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, with about 846,000 BTC.
Circle (CRCL)Issuer of the USDC stablecoin. Listed on the NYSE in June 2025.
Bullish (BLSH)Crypto exchange group. Listed on the NYSE in August 2025.
Gemini (GEMI)Crypto exchange. Listed on Nasdaq in September 2025.
Galaxy (GLXY)Crypto trading, asset management and data centres. Listed on Nasdaq.
Miners (MARA, RIOT, CLSK, HUT)Bitcoin mining companies, several now shifting into AI data centres.

These stocks usually move with the crypto market, often more sharply. Strategy, for example, rises and falls with Bitcoin but also reflects its borrowing and share issuance. Company risks such as regulation, hacks and debt come on top of crypto price risk.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs

A spot Bitcoin ETF holds real Bitcoin and trades like a share. US Bitcoin ETFs such as BlackRock's IBIT now hold more than $100 billion, and have taken in money on seven straight days this week (see our ETF flows report). For many Indians, an ETF is a simpler way to get Bitcoin exposure through a regulated broker. Our guide on investing in Bitcoin ETFs from India goes through the steps.

Crypto-linked stocks in India

India has almost no listed crypto companies. The closest example is Jetking Infotrain on the BSE, which began buying Bitcoin for its treasury in late 2024 and holds a small amount. It has faced a long regulatory dispute over a share issue linked to that plan, covered in our report on Jetking's AGM and SAT ruling. Lists of "blockchain stocks" sometimes include Indian IT companies with blockchain projects, but those are technology businesses, not crypto holders.

India also has no crypto mutual fund. A blockchain fund of funds was approved in 2021 but never launched, and SEBI has said mutual funds cannot make crypto-related investments until there is a law.

How to buy US crypto stocks from India

  1. Open an account with an LRS-based US investing platform or an Indian broker that offers US stocks.
  2. Complete KYC and link your bank account.
  3. Send money abroad under the LRS. The limit is $250,000 per financial year. TCS is nil up to ₹10 lakh a year, then 20% on investment remittances. TCS is not a cost: you claim it back in your tax return.
  4. Buy the stock or ETF in dollars.

Tax: foreign shares and ETFs are taxed as foreign capital assets. Gains within 24 months are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. After 24 months, the long-term rate is 12.5%. Dividends are taxed at your slab rate, with US tax withheld that you may be able to claim as a credit. You must also report foreign assets in Schedule FA of your ITR.

Which is right for you?

If you want direct exposure to a coin, you can buy it on a FIU-registered exchange and accept the 30% tax. If you prefer a regulated broker and normal capital gains tax, a US Bitcoin ETF or crypto stock may suit you better, though you take on currency and company risk. Compare the costs using our crypto tax calculator.
