Yes, MetaMask is legal to use in India. It is a self-custody wallet, not an exchange: it never holds your coins or keys, so it is not registered with FIU-IND and generally does not need to be. No Indian law bans it, but crypto tax still applies to every sale and swap you make from it, and if you lose your recovery phrase or fall for a scam, nobody can reverse it.

Key takeaways

  • FIU-IND registration applies to businesses that exchange, transfer or hold crypto for customers. MetaMask software does none of these with your keys.
  • MetaMask was not named in any of FIU-IND's actions against offshore platforms in 2023, 2025 or September 2026.
  • Since January 2026, FIU-IND's guidelines make Indian exchanges collect extra data on withdrawals to self-hosted wallets such as MetaMask.
  • Moving coins into MetaMask is not taxed. Swapping or selling them is, at 30% plus cess.
  • MetaMask will never ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase. Anyone who does is a scammer.

What MetaMask is, and what it is not

MetaMask is a crypto wallet made by the US software company Consensys. It runs as a browser extension and as a mobile app for Android and iPhone. When you create a wallet, MetaMask generates your private keys on your own device and shows you a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. That phrase is the only backup. MetaMask's own help pages say its team will never ask for it and cannot recover a wallet if you lose it.

MetaMask began as an Ethereum wallet and still works with Ethereum and compatible networks such as BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base and Linea. It has since added Solana (2025), Bitcoin (December 2025, native SegWit addresses) and Tron (15 January 2026). Inside the app you will also find:

  • Buy: purchases handled by third-party payment providers.
  • Swaps and bridges: quotes from outside trading venues, with a MetaMask fee of 0.875% built into each quote, plus the network fee.
  • Perps: leveraged futures trading added in October 2025, run through the Hyperliquid exchange.

Is MetaMask FIU registered?

No. MetaMask is not among the platforms on our list of FIU-registered crypto exchanges, and for the wallet itself that is expected. In March 2023 the government brought five crypto activities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), when carried out as a business for or on behalf of another person:

  1. exchanging crypto for rupees or other money;
  2. exchanging one crypto for another;
  3. transferring crypto;
  4. safekeeping or administering crypto, or the keys that control it;
  5. financial services linked to a token issuer's sale.

Businesses doing these must register with FIU-IND, verify customers and report suspicious transactions. MetaMask software does not hold your keys or move coins on your behalf; you sign every transaction yourself. That is why self-custody wallets are treated differently from custodial apps, where the company holds your coins. We explain the same point for the other popular wallet in is Trust Wallet FIU registered.

The grey area is the services inside the app. When you buy, swap, bridge or trade perps in MetaMask, a third party or an on-chain protocol carries out the trade, and their standing under Indian rules varies. Perps, for example, run on Hyperliquid, which is not registered in India; see is Hyperliquid legal in India before you use them. If you want every rupee to pass through a registered Indian platform, buy there and withdraw to MetaMask.

Is MetaMask legal or banned in India?

It is legal, and it is not banned. India taxes and monitors crypto rather than prohibiting it; our explainer on whether cryptocurrency is legal in India covers the law in full. Crypto is not legal tender, and there is no RBI licence for any crypto app, which is why the idea of an RBI-approved crypto exchange list is a myth, as we also explain in is CoinDCX RBI approved.

FIU-IND's enforcement has targeted unregistered platforms, not wallet software. It issued notices to nine offshore exchanges in December 2023, to 25 more platforms in October 2025, and named 15 exchanges and swap services in September 2026, as listed in our story on FIU-IND blocking 15 offshore exchanges. MetaMask was not named in any of them.

What FIU-IND's 2026 rules mean for transfers to MetaMask

On 8 January 2026 FIU-IND issued updated anti-money laundering guidelines for registered crypto platforms. They do not regulate you or your wallet directly. They regulate the exchange you withdraw from. The parts that affect MetaMask users are:

  • Self-hosted wallet transfers: exchanges must collect data on transfers to and from unhosted wallets, assess the risk and apply extra checks where needed.
  • Wallet records: customer records now include wallet addresses and transaction hashes, along with IP address, device and location data.
  • Travel rule: sender and receiver details must travel with transfers in real time, not be filed afterwards.
  • Mixers and privacy coins: exchanges should not handle transactions linked to mixers, and anonymity-focused tokens are treated as unacceptably high risk.

In practice, your exchange may ask whether a withdrawal address is your own wallet, hold some transfers for review or ask you to whitelist addresses in advance. Answer truthfully. Coins that have passed through a mixer may be refused when you try to deposit them back.

Exchange policies also differ. CoinSwitch does not allow crypto withdrawals at all, and Delta Exchange India and Pi42 pay out only in rupees. On CoinDCX you must switch crypto withdrawals on, and doing so blocks UPI deposits on that account because, the company says, its banking partners do not allow both together. Binance lets users withdraw to their own wallets and said in May 2026 that no Indian law or guideline sets withdrawal limits; see is Binance legal in India for its FIU status. How to move crypto from an Indian exchange to MetaMask safely

  1. Install the real app. Start from metamask.io and follow its link to the official store. Do not search the extension store and pick the first result.
  2. Write down the recovery phrase on paper and keep it offline. Never photograph it or save it in email or cloud notes. Our guide to storing a seed phrase safely shows how.
  3. Choose the network first. Pick one that both your exchange and MetaMask support for that coin, then select it on both sides.
  4. Copy the matching address. MetaMask shows one 0x address for Ethereum-style networks, but separate addresses for Solana, Bitcoin and Tron.
  5. Send a small test amount, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest.
  6. Keep some gas. You will need the network's own coin to move tokens later, such as ETH on Ethereum or BNB on BNB Chain.
  7. Save the transaction hash from your exchange for your tax records.
NetworkAddress in MetaMaskFee paid inWatch out for
EthereumStarts with 0xETHUsually the highest fees
BNB ChainSame 0x addressBNBPick BEP-20 on your exchange
Polygon, Arbitrum, BaseSame 0x addressPOL on Polygon, ETH on Arbitrum and BaseCheck your exchange supports that network for the coin
SolanaSeparate address, no 0xSOLNever send Solana coins to a 0x address
BitcoinSeparate address starting bc1qBTCSlower than other networks
Tron (TRC-20)Separate address starting with TTRXMetaMask says to send TRX first; USDT alone does not activate the account

A personal wallet does not use a memo or tag; those are only for some exchange deposit addresses. If you are unsure which USDT network to use, read TRC-20 vs ERC-20 vs BEP-20. Network fees are paid in each chain's own coin; Ether was about ₹2,57,810 on 1 October 2026 and is ₹257,511 now on the Ethereum price in INR page.

MetaMask scams Indians should know

Because MetaMask cannot reverse anything, scammers aim at you, not at the software. The common traps are:

  • Fake extensions and apps. In 2025 security researchers found more than 40 fake wallet add-ons in Firefox's official store, some copying MetaMask, that stole recovery phrases as users typed them.
  • Recovery phrase phishing. Emails, SMS and pop-ups claiming a "mandatory upgrade", "wallet verification" or "2FA activation" lead to fake sites that ask for your phrase.
  • Fake support. Replies on X, Telegram or WhatsApp from "MetaMask support" offering to fix a stuck transaction. Real support never asks for your phrase.
  • Malicious approvals. A website asks you to sign a token approval or permit, which lets it drain the token later. Read every signing request and use a separate wallet for unfamiliar sites.
  • Fake token airdrops. MetaMask had not launched its own token as of 1 October 2026, so a site asking you to "claim" one by connecting your wallet is a trap.
  • Address poisoning. Scammers send tiny amounts from an address that looks like one you use, hoping you copy it from your history. Always copy addresses from the source.

If you are cheated, report it on the national cybercrime portal or by calling 1930; our guide on how to report a crypto scam in India lists what to include.

Tax on MetaMask transactions

A self-custody wallet does not change your tax position. Gains on crypto are taxed at a flat 30% plus 4% cess under the rules introduced as Section 115BBH, with no deduction except the cost of acquisition, and losses cannot be set off against other income or carried forward.

  • Moving coins from an exchange to MetaMask, or between your own wallets, is not a sale and is not taxed.
  • Swapping one token for another counts as a transfer. Any gain is taxable and must be reported in Schedule VDA.
  • TDS is not deducted on on-chain swaps. The 1% TDS rules still exist, so keep records and take advice if your volumes are large.

Worked example: at about ₹2,57,810 per ETH on 1 October 2026, ₹50,000 bought about 0.194 ETH. Suppose you move it to MetaMask and later swap it for USDC when it is worth ₹60,000. Your gain is ₹10,000, so tax is ₹3,000 plus ₹120 cess, a total of ₹3,120. The MetaMask swap fee on ₹60,000 would be about ₹525, plus the network fee; apart from the cost of acquisition, no expense can be deducted under these rules. Our crypto tax guide and the crypto tax calculator help at filing time.

Is MetaMask safe to use?

The wallet is among the most widely used in the world, but its safety depends on how you use it. For larger amounts, connect a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Trezor to MetaMask so your keys never touch the computer. Keep a small "hot" wallet for apps and a separate one for savings, and review old token approvals from time to time. Our comparison of hot and cold wallets explains the trade-off.

Getting money from MetaMask back to your bank

MetaMask cannot pay rupees into a bank account. The clean route is to send your coins to an FIU-registered Indian exchange that accepts crypto deposits, sell them for INR and withdraw by IMPS or NEFT, with 1% TDS deducted on the sale. The steps are the same as in our guide to withdrawing from Trust Wallet to a bank account, and for stablecoins see how to convert USDT to INR and how to withdraw crypto to your bank account.

Some people sell through P2P marketplaces instead, including Binance P2P, as described in our Binance review and guide to trading on Binance from India. Money from strangers can get your bank account frozen, so read P2P trading and bank freeze risks first. FAQ

Is MetaMask legal in India?

Yes. No Indian law bans self-custody wallets, and MetaMask was not named in any FIU-IND action. Crypto tax still applies to your sales and swaps.

Is MetaMask FIU registered?

No. MetaMask is wallet software that never holds your keys or funds, so it is not treated like an exchange. The Indian exchange you withdraw from is the one that must be registered.

Is MetaMask safe in India?

The software is widely used and secure if you download it from metamask.io and keep your recovery phrase offline. Most losses come from fake apps, phishing and malicious approvals, not from the wallet itself.

Can I withdraw money from MetaMask to my bank account?

Not directly. Send your crypto to an FIU-registered Indian exchange that accepts deposits, sell it for rupees and withdraw by IMPS or NEFT.

Do I pay tax on crypto held in MetaMask?

Holding or moving coins is not taxed. Selling or swapping them is taxed at 30% plus cess on the gain and must be reported in Schedule VDA.

Can I receive USDT TRC-20 in MetaMask?

Yes, since MetaMask added Tron in January 2026, but only to your separate Tron address that starts with T. Send a little TRX first to activate it, and never send TRC-20 USDT to a 0x address.
