Coinbase review 2026: fees, safety and who it suits

Coinbase is the largest crypto exchange listed in the United States. It launched in India in 2022, left in 2023, registered with FIU-IND in March 2025 and, from 1 June 2026, opened direct rupee deposits and withdrawals. Here is how it works for Indian users today.

Verdict in short

A credible option backed by a public company that publishes audited accounts, now with rupee deposits, an INR order book and perpetual futures. It is still new in India: there is no public India fee table, the rupee rollout was uneven, and Travel Rule checks slow down every crypto transfer.

Our score: 7.3/10 (#7 of 12)

Coinbase ranks #7 of 12 in our best crypto app in India ranking for 2026. Just above it is Binance (7.5); just below is Delta Exchange (7.2). Every app is scored on the same seven tests (how we score).

Coinbase in India: a short history

Coinbase launched in India in April 2022 with UPI payments but paused UPI within days after the payments body NPCI said it was not aware of any crypto exchange using UPI. It stopped serving Indian users in September 2023. It registered with FIU-IND in March 2025, reopened sign-ups for crypto-to-crypto trading in late 2025 and, from 1 June 2026, added direct rupee deposits and withdrawals, a local INR order book and perpetual futures. Our Coinbase India explainer covers the history and Coinbase Custody in more detail.

Rupees in and out

Coinbase announced rupee deposits and withdrawals by IMPS from a verified bank account in your name, with no fee on INR deposits. Its help page now also lists UPI (up to ₹1 lakh a transaction, three a day) and NEFT/RTGS. The rollout was gradual, and some verified users saw deposits unavailable in the first days, so check what your account shows. We could not find published INR withdrawal fees.

Fees and products

Coinbase does not publish a separate fee table for India. On Advanced Trade, fees are tiered by your 30-day volume and shown after you sign in; the simple buy button adds a spread on top of the fee, so it is usually the more expensive way to buy. Indian users can trade spot on the INR order book and perpetual futures on major coins with USDC margin, run through Coinbase International Exchange. Leverage magnifies losses; read risk management and position sizing first.

Moving crypto out: the Travel Rule

You can send coins to an outside wallet, but Indian rules require Coinbase to collect sender and recipient details for every external transfer, and it supports only selected exchanges as counterparties. Expect extra forms and some delay compared with Indian exchanges that have run these checks for longer. See how to transfer crypto between exchanges.

Is Coinbase safe?

Coinbase India Pvt Ltd is registered with FIU-IND and withholds the 1% TDS on spot trades. As a US-listed company, Coinbase publishes audited results every quarter; it says most customer crypto sits in cold storage and it carries crime insurance. It does not publish a Merkle-tree proof of reserves like some Indian exchanges. We found no theft of customer crypto, but in May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that criminals had bribed support agents at an outsourcing firm in India to steal data on 69,461 customers; it refused a $20 million ransom. The lesson: Coinbase staff will never ask for your password, 2FA code or recovery phrase, as our report on a Coinbase impersonation scam shows.

Who should use Coinbase?

Investors who value a large, audited global company and want INR deposits and perpetuals in one account. If you want UPI, SIPs, INR options or published fees today, CoinDCX, in which Coinbase itself has invested, or CoinSwitch are simpler.
